Poker Capital is Vegas

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Is there any question that Las Vegas is the poker capital of the world? The city’s many casinos offer more poker tables than anywhere else and it is virtually impossible to count all the tournaments that are held in the city each year, mostly because the schedule is constantly being updated with new events. If slots were the game of choice of the past, poker is clearly the city’s future.

The various hotels in Las Vegas all offer some form of gambling, usually including a poker table or two. A hotel that couldn’t hold on to its gambling license probably wouldn’t stay in business long. People staying at the encore las vegas expect to be able to play poker and other games.

The internet has made poker games more popular than in the past. The rise of cable television has also played a role, as televised poker tournaments can be found on some channel or other virtually all the time. The more games people watch, the more they play online, the more they believe that they need to play in Vegas. Win or lose, they want to test their mettle against the big players in Vegas, just so they can say they had the experience once in their life.

Retro Costume Choices

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

There’s a nostalgia for the past that is shared by nearly everyone in contemporary society. They may long for an era that was personally significant in their life, such as their teenage years or when they met their significant other. They may also have nostalgia for an era that preceded their birth — a desire to associate with a bygone era that they never knew but that they have romanticized for whatever reason. Many people turn to these eras when trying to come up with ideas for an outfit for Halloween or a costume themed event.

Costumes are all about celebrating another identity and associating oneself with the best, or most famous, characteristics of a specific figure or an age. Hence the consistent popularity of superhero and historical role model costumes. People want to emulate a person or an idea and there are some distinct eras that bring to mind a specific quality of life or philosophy.

Free spirited people may want to dress up as hippies or flower children from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Those who love glamor and the good life may focus instead on the roaring 1920s. People with a more rebellious streak may seek to mimic the bad boys of a given era. James Dean is an iconic rebel trapped in the boring 1950s while guys choosing to wear Kiss costumes want to evoke the rock and roll excesses of the 1970s.
