Retro Costume Choices

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

There’s a nostalgia for the past that is shared by nearly everyone in contemporary society. They may long for an era that was personally significant in their life, such as their teenage years or when they met their significant other. They may also have nostalgia for an era that preceded their birth — a desire to associate with a bygone era that they never knew but that they have romanticized for whatever reason. Many people turn to these eras when trying to come up with ideas for an outfit for Halloween or a costume themed event.

Costumes are all about celebrating another identity and associating oneself with the best, or most famous, characteristics of a specific figure or an age. Hence the consistent popularity of superhero and historical role model costumes. People want to emulate a person or an idea and there are some distinct eras that bring to mind a specific quality of life or philosophy.

Free spirited people may want to dress up as hippies or flower children from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Those who love glamor and the good life may focus instead on the roaring 1920s. People with a more rebellious streak may seek to mimic the bad boys of a given era. James Dean is an iconic rebel trapped in the boring 1950s while guys choosing to wear Kiss costumes want to evoke the rock and roll excesses of the 1970s.

Men and Women Appreciate the Beauty and Shine of Tungsten

Friday, April 29th, 2011

People are immediately attracted to tungsten wedding bands when they first see them. And the aesthetic appeal will typically inspire a pause in movement along the jewelry case and a desire for a closer look. The metal has a beautiful and unique shine and hue, and it captivates the attention of shoppers very easily. The rings are perfect for men and women and seem to attract both. And they are a great way to establish a matching quality while maintaining an individual appeal. And when a thin strip of gold is added down the middle, the sophisticated masculine quality is enhanced. Meanwhile the natural beauty and shine of the ring has a sparkling feminine appeal.

In addition to all of the visually appealing aspects of these rings, the metal itself has some incredible scientific features that make tungsten carbide rings the right choice. The metal goes through a fusion process at 2,400 Fahrenheit that combines the tungsten and carbide to create a ring that is both scratch proof and non-bendable or breakable. The metal is so tough that it takes a diamond compound (or something of equal strength) to smooth and polish it. And this creates a shine and polished appeal that is permanent. They are virtually indestructible and the quality and beauty of the ring will last as long as the finger on which it’s worn, and most likely longer. That’s a statement on the ring’s quality, not life expectancy which at this point might be in the upper eighties. Shopping for wedding rings is a special event and it should be as fun and as exciting as are the years to come.

Building a Map Collection

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Collecting is an exercise in both categorization and hunting. Just as hunters will stalk their prey for hours over miles of terrain, map collectors will scour catalogs and estate sales and countless other venues, sometimes for years, in search of a specific map that will improve their collection. Once obtained, the map must them be organized into the appropriate category within the collection.

When it comes to map collecting, there are general and specialized collectors. A general collector may be a museum or it may be a person who simply loves the idea of cartography. They do not focus on any specific era, location, or type of map. That means that a World War I london map is just as important to them as a map of ancient Greece. Specialty collectors will have a theme for their maps. They will seek maps of a certain time period or of a specific part of the world over time. Others build collections around a single type of map, such as road maps or topographical maps, or even a specific cartographer.

To start collecting, a map lover needs to first decide what type of collection they want. They can then begin to identify where they are most likely to find those maps. A map of england from the time of Henry VIII is not likely to be found in a swap meet in Cleveland or at an antique shop that specializes in South American artifacts. Slowly they will begin to find the maps they seek and identify additional maps to add to their wish list.
